  • 2023 Christmas Letter

From African Bible Colleges Chancellor Christmas is the great reminder of the new life that we have in Christ. It is also a reminder that God is always doing new things among us. This Christmas, we are excited about the new ways that God is working on our African Bible Colleges campuses. First, many of you have heard the news that we have a new incoming President of ABC, Lee Sonius. Lee and his wife, Michelle, have spent most of their lives living and serving in Africa with SIM and HCJB (Reach Beyond). Lee will begin on January 1, 2024, and we are excited to have them as part of our ABC family, giving leadership to all of our campuses and our ministry. In Malawi we have a new Campus Director, Mr. Blessings Chibambo. Blessings is an ABC graduate and has led the organization Live Love Malawi for many years. Blessings is doing an excellent job leading our work on the campus and bringing oneness to the many facets of our ministry in Malawi. In Liberia, it is so good to have Del and Becky Chinchen re-join our team on the campus. Del and Becky have already begun serving with Dr. Buzz Beauchamp, giving administrative and academic leadership. In Uganda, Vice Chancellor Dr. Jeremiah Pitts has begun working on plans for a new classroom and student building to expand our facilities so that we can meet the needs of the growing college. Please be praying this Christmas for God‘s work in Africa to continue to spread through our leaders, faculty, students, and graduates. And please consider making a donation to ABC this Christmas. Your support continues to be vital in all that we do. May God bless you and your family in a special way this Christmas. Dr. Palmer Chinchen Chancellor Making Everyday Better Thanks to generous support from donors like you, we have made some much needed updates on our campuses. One such project is in the men's dormitories on our ABC campus in Malawi. This fall, we were able to renovate several restrooms and add space in the laundry areas. These and other improvements have enhanced the residential experience for the young men and women who live on our campus while attending ABC. More renovations are on the way! With your continued support, we plan to make many more improvements throughout our campuses in the coming months. Stay tuned! James Otundo James Otundo 1/1 ABC Online Program: Building Bright Futures Anytime Anywhere Can you give us a brief bio about yourself? I am deeply rooted in my faith as a believer, finding strength and purpose in my relationship with God. Alongside my academic pursuits, I am blessed to be a husband to my best friend, Rachel, and a cherished member of a loving family with remarkable parents, Deborah and Hanson. My vision of "Love & Lead" propels me forward, steering my passion towards governance and leadership, particularly in serving children and youth through sports and mentorship. What inspired you to pursue your online education and the specific program you’re enrolled in? My decision to pursue online education was rooted in a desire for flexibility and accessibility considering my busy schedule. Recognizing the importance of deepening my understanding of the Bible, I enrolled in the Biblical Studies program to align my academic journey with my faith journey to be better equipped in my servant leadership journey as I Engage, Equip and Empower the world changers I work with in my community. Can you share some of your academic achievements and accomplishments during your time as an online student? I've achieved both academically and personally. I excelled in coursework, deepening my connection with scriptures through dedication and hard work. This journey boosted my knowledge and molded my character. Completing my John Maxwell certification at ABC was a significant milestone. I also earned a master’s in development communication from Daystar University in Nairobi, graduating in November 2023. Online education's flexibility made this possible. Engaging with remarkable teachers and peers at ABC online enriched my academic journey. How has the support from donors or scholarships helped you with your education? Their contributions have supported my studies and spiritual growth, creating an environment for academic flourishing. Their generosity humbles me, and I deeply appreciate the tremendous support that has enabled my participation in challenging class sessions. How has your online education prepared you for your future career goals or aspirations? My online education is a steppingstone toward my career goals, offering a sturdy foundation in Biblical Studies and the flexibility to balance personal commitments and studies. It has equipped me with the skills and knowledge for a path of service, leadership, and mentorship, in line with my vision of "Love & Lead." What would you like to convey to the potential donors who are considering supporting the Online Program like yourself during the Christmas season? I would like to convey my heartfelt gratitude to potential donors considering supporting the Online Program. Your generosity not only transforms lives but also contributes to the development of individuals dedicated to serving others and the broader mission of education, faith, and service. Your support enables students like myself to pursue education, acquire valuable skills, and make a positive impact on our communities. As you consider giving, remember the impact your support has in shaping futures and nurturing individuals who are committed to "Love & Lead." Proverbs 11:25 - "A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed." Your generosity is an investment in a brighter future for many. Student Donor Highlight Sponsoring an ABC student extends far beyond providing financial assistance and, in special cases, includes fostering lifelong friendships. This is exemplified in the story of Doug and Chisomo. Doug discovered ABC’s student sponsorship program through our partnership with the online giving platform DonorSee. Upon his first encounter with ABC, Doug expressed, "Wow, here are people who are truly motivated to learn and improve themselves," particularly inspired by Chisomo’s video and her enthusiasm for shaping her future. Despite the challenges of COVID-19, Doug, aware of its global impact, was moved after watching Chisomo's video requesting help with school fees. He committed to sponsoring her throughout her time at ABC, providing more support than initially requested, and surprising Chisomo with this good news. Chisomo, on the verge of discontinuing her education due to financial struggles in her second year at ABC, sought help through ABC’s DonorSee sponsorship program. To her surprise, she was granted the gift of education, thanks to Doug's support. Their online sponsorship enabled Doug and Chisomo to connect, exchanging encouraging messages and updates on Chisomo’s studies. Doug significantly influenced Chisomo's pursuit of higher education. With sponsorship, Chisomo completed her studies at ABC Malawi in June 2022 and now serves as the Deputy Public Relations Officer for the Malawian Ministry of Education, all because someone assisted her with tuition. As their time at ABC drew to a close, Doug and Chisomo expressed a desire to meet if Chisomo ever visited America. Recently accepted to pursue her Master's Degree at Bowling Green State University, Chisomo plans to travel to America and meet Doug in person. Their story illustrates how sponsoring an ABC student can create enduring relationships—a gift that keeps giving. You too can witness the impact of your generosity, fulfill a need, and make a profound difference in someone's life. Join us in sponsoring an ABC ChangeMaker. Our sponsorship program enables real-time online connections with your ABC student, allowing you to share photos, videos, prayers, and praises across continents! We've received 78 sponsorships this year and aim for 122 more to achieve our goal of supporting 200 students! Sponsor HERE A Brighter Future For Donor & Student Dr. Paul Chinchen African Bible Colleges Is At A Launchpad Moment In Our History For almost 50 years, ABC has been visionary in its approach to the work of our mission. We have literally and figuratively broken new ground and paved new paths as we strived to achieve God’s work in Liberia, Malawi, and Uganda. And once again, we are in the midst of very dynamic growth both inside and outside our mission. In this newsletter, you have seen just a few examples of some of the new faces, new directions, and new initiatives that are shaping ABC both now and for the future. One of the most important people in our plans is you. We want you to be a vital part of this growth by making a contribution today to ABC in support of a number of different areas of vital need. We want to see dramatic increases in our student enrollments, both on our campuses and in our new online programs. This growth will create “New Faces and New Stories” in the ABC family. Our sustained growth cannot succeed without healthy, vibrant campuses in Liberia, Malawi, and Uganda. And we have facilities on all three campuses that need restoration and/or renovation to keep up with the housing and instructional needs of our students, faculty, and staff. We want to see “The Old Made New Again” through both new construction and vital renovations on all our campuses. We must also produce growth in our outreach missions. We minister to the bodies and spirits of tens of thousands of patients at our ABC Community Hospital and Clinics in Malawi each year. We bring the Gospel to millions through our daily Christian messages on our radio and television stations. We maintain critical support and connections with our graduates and their communities in Uganda through our new Aviation Program. Outreach efforts like these in the communities and countries we serve offer the Gospel to “New Ears to Hear and New Eyes to See” each and every day. As we seek to increase our impact on students, we continue to explore new areas of study and instruction to answer the needs of Africa. Our new online programs for both undergraduate and MBA instruction offer up the power of an African Bible Colleges education to anyone in the world who has an internet connection. We are working toward new degree programs in business, information technology, and aviation. And plans are rapidly being developed for our new STEM High School—the first of its kind in Malawi. These new programs, like all our other educational programs, will maintain ABC’s commitment to Bible-centered curriculum. They will offer “An Eternal Gospel Delivered in New Directions.” Over the last fifty years, ABC has experienced some dramatic launchpad moments… Jack and Nell Chinchen founding African Bible Colleges; the Chinchen’s commiting to bringing their work to Malawi and, later, Uganda; Paul Chinchen completing his vision for a medical center in Malawi… just to name a few. Now is another launchpad moment in ABC’s history. We are asking you to make a donation to African Bible Colleges today that will change lives for the next fifty years. Distinctive of a Bible College Education The distinctive function of a Bible College/University is to prepare students for Christian General, and Professional Education. The Bible major (primary course of study) is at the heart of the Bible College/University curriculum. A Bible College/University may also offer Liberal Arts majors provided these are in addition to and do not displace the required Bible major or alter the objectives of the Bible College education. Statement of Faith THE BIBLE The Bible is the verbally inspired Word of God, the written record of His supernatural revelation of Himself to man, absolute in its authority, complete in its revelation, final in its content, and without error. THE GODHEAD God is One God, who reveals Himself in three Persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. 1. The Father: who is Spirit, infinite, eternal and unchangeable in all His attributes. 2. The Son, Jesus Christ: His deity, virgin birth, sinless life, substitutionary atoning death, bodily resurrection, personal exaltation at God’s right hand and personal return. 3. The Holy Spirit: who is a Divine Person, equal with the Father and the Son and of the same nature. THE ESTATE OF MAN The fall and lost estate of man, whose total depravity alienates him from God, makes necessary his salvation. 1. Man’s salvation is only by grace, a free gift of God, through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, who died for our sins according to the Scriptures. Those who thus are moved by the Spirit of God to receive Christ by faith have their sins forgiven, their hearts cleansed, are born of the Spirit, become children of God and are made new Creatures in Christ. 2. Saved, man is assured of eternal blessedness. Lost, man is assured of everlasting punishment in hell. THE CHURCH The church is the bride of Christ. In its universal aspect, it comprises the whole body of those who have been born of the Spirit, and in its local expression it is established for worship, mutual edification, and witness. THE CHRISTIAN LIFE If man is to fellowship with his Holy God, his Christian life must be holy. God in His grace has made this life available to man: 1. He has given him the Scriptures that he might see sin. 2. He has given him the Holy Spirit to convict of sin. 3. He has given His Son to pay the penalty of sin. 4. He has given him access to His throne of grace that he might confess his sin and be forgiven and cleansed. Christian living includes Christian service, the winning of souls and the preaching and teaching of the gospel in the uttermost parts of the earth in order to fulfill Christ’s great commission. 1. In carrying on this work there is needed the supernatural power of the Holy Spirit. 2. In all this service prayer is to have the central place. THE CHRISTIAN HOPE Jesus Christ will come again to earth the second time. We are to look for His soon coming, yea, to long for it, for He will come personally, bodily and visibly and with power and glory. Supported Ministries ABC Christian Academy ABC Mission Hospital Radio ABC ABC TV ABI (African Business Institute) Project Juembo Student Outreach Ministries Code of Conduct African Bible Colleges (ABC) is for the establishment of a Christ-centered community that promotes unity. When you join our ABC staff team or student body you are to participate in a professional and God glorifying manner. No matter where you are, you are an ambassador for Jesus Christ and an ambassador of ABC. We expect ABC staff, missionary staff and students to strive to do all things with excellence in alignment with 1 Corinthians 10:31, “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God”.

  • The Schimke Family | African Bible Colleges

Kurt + Marlene Schimke ABC Missionaries Kurt & Marlene Schimke have the great privilege of serving Christ at the campus of the African Bible University in Kampala, Uganda. They have both worked there as teachers and in different administrative roles. The road to prepare and be able to serve in these roles was a long one, but very much worth it! Support the Schimkes About Kurt is from central California valley country, and Marlene is from Eastern Colorado cow country! Kurt attended Christian schools throughout his upbringing, and felt a strong call to missions while a teenager. He initially trained for Missionary Aviation at Christian Heritage College in Southern California, and served in that capacity for a short term in the 1990’s, but the Lord directed his focus away from machines toward the people who benefitted from them. Marlene comes from a strong Christian home but never had a personal missions focus until her college years. This change of heart came through a semester as an exchange student in Costa Rica, which led to further field training during and after her college years. After graduation from Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa, she worked for that school as a college recruiter. She then met Kurt during his travels to raise support for his first term as a missionary in Kenya. They married in 1997, and hoped to return to Africa soon thereafter, but the Lord had them wait while Kurt attended seminary. After completion of his training at New Geneva Theological Seminary in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the door opened up for them to serve in Uganda in 2006 with three little children in tow. The wait was worth it, and the benefit and results of service have been both challenging and very rewarding! Kurt and Marlene are blessed with 4 children: Zoe -2001, Ana -2003, Nick -2005, and Lexi –2011, and now a son-in-law (Seth, married to Zoe). Kurt completed his Doctorate from Stellenbosch University in South Africa in 2018 and continues to teach numerous subjects at ABU campus. He also remains faithfully committed to the work with the boda-boda (motorcycle) taxi drivers through Community at Heart Outreach. Marlene teaches Speech Communication on campus, home schools our last-born child still at home, and also participates in various activities from running a homeschool coop, playing piano for chapel services, helping other homeschool families, and assisting in campus events as needed. Kurt can be reached via: kurt@kmschimke.org Marlene can be reached via: marlene@kmschimke.org Here are ways you can get involved: Pray: Commit to regular prayer for us, the campus ministries of African Bible University, and the people of Kampala, Uganda. For now, please pray for: The people of Uganda, who have endured the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and are still trying to recover financially. The students of African Bible University, navigating their educational journeys, often along with family challenges and difficulties.
